Six people were injured after the van careered into the cafe

The male suspect drove a van into the seating area outside the eatery in the city centre on Friday afternoon.

The unidentified driver then dumped the vehicle and fled the scene before he was later arrested in the northern port city of Antwerp.

Locals were forced to dive out of the way of its deadly path before it hurtled into diners.

Chilling images showed tables and chairs scattered across the floor.

Brussels mayor Phillipe Close told Le Soir that the van was “travelling at an extremely high speed and was aiming for the terrace”.

Cops said it was too soon to speculate on whether the driver had deliberately targeted the diners.

And prosecutors said it was not yet clear whether the incident was an attack or an accident.

The British Embassy in Belgium said they were aware of the incident on the pedestrian street of Rue Neuve that occurred shortly before 1pm local time.

Brussels prosecutor’s spokewoman Willemien Baert said: “The investigation is still in progress to clarify the exact circumstances.

“At this stage various lines of enquiry are still open and the motives of the suspect are not yet known.

“The evidence does recall attacks that have been committed in the past, but for the moment it is not yet certain that it is an attack, it is possible that it was only an accident.”

Belgium’s terrorism tracking Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis briefly raised the threat level in the capital from “medium” to “serious” – from two to three on a scale of four.

But the level was dropped back to medium a few hours later after officials found “reassuring elements in their investigation”.

The road leads into a busy shopping area where hundreds of locals and tourists were visiting before they heard the almighty smash.

A witness told local media: “We were just sitting on the terrace. The terraces were full.

“Suddenly a white van came at full speed, swerving from left to right. We had to jump against the wall.

“On the other street, the driver hit another terrace, then the van sped off.”

The six who were injured were treated for minor injuries and shock, according to the Brussels fire service.

The area remains cordoned off as the investigation gets underway.
